Key Control
Key Protection
Effective security requires effective control and management of keys. If it is possible for anybody to obtain a key, the premises become vulnerable to unauthorised or criminal intruders. On the other hand, if it is too difficult to obtain spare keys, legitimate users will be inconvenienced. To balance this problem, ASSA ABLOY Door Solutions offers five graded levels of key protection. Each step provides a different balance between convenience and security.
• Step 1: Unregistered
- No restrictions on purchasing keys.
• Step 2: Local Registration
- Keys may be purchased through authorised retailers on receipt of an official letter of authority.
• Step 3: In-house Registration
- Keyblanks may be purchased by the end user to enable in-house keycutting under their own control.
• Step 4: Stockist Registration
- Keys may be only purchased through a single nominated ASSA Security Centre according to an authorisation procedure agreed with the end user.
• Step 5: Central Registration
- Keys are available direct from ASSA ABLOY Door Solutions only, controlled by a system of keycards and authorised signatures.
Patent protection
Effective key control requires that registered keys are only available from specific, authorised security centres. Under current legislation the only types of key that can be protected in this way are those covered by an up-to-date international patent which if necessary will be defended in court by the manufacturer.
